Chapter · Why Sunday is still different at my house
The women had their spices ready before the Sabbath began. Sunday is made on Saturday night.
Mama polished every shoe in the house on a sheet of newspaper on the kitchen floor on Saturday night, and for years I thought it was about shoes. It was about walking into the Lord's house in the morning with nothing left to do but go. What still happens at my house on Saturday night fits in an hour.
- Stay home. Go out on Saturday night and you come to church with your mind still out.
- Start whatever Sunday dinner needs started, so the morning has no cooking in it.
- Hang up what you're wearing and set the shoes under it.
- Put the offering in its envelope.
- Read the passage ahead if your church prints it in the bulletin. If it doesn't, read Psalm 92, which my Bible titles a psalm for the sabbath day.
- Make the phone call. One of the oldest Christian writings outside the Bible told believers to gather every Lord's day and to make peace first with anybody they were at odds with. If there is a woman you're going to have to pass in the aisle, call her Saturday night.
- Go to bed early. John Newton wrote a hymn for Saturday night, and the end of its third verse is what I would have you fall asleep on:
From our worldly cares set free,
May we rest, this night, with thee.
